The History of Turtle Ship
The 'Turtle War' Ship (Keo-Book-Sun) is a very famous Korean war ship that was under the command of Admiral Lee Sun Shin (1545-1598). The Ship played a significant role in driving back the Japanese fleet during the Hydeyoshi Invasion of Korea in the year 1592. It was also used in many other naval battles as well as the 'Han-San Naval Engagement' which was one of four major naval engagements worldwide.
Designed by Admiral Lee, and built with a steel dome cover over the deck of a classical type Korean ship called, 'Phan-Ok', hundreds of sharp swords were installed on the outer surface of the dome to make boarding the ship by enemies difficult and hazardous. The name is derived from the Korean word for turtle, (Keo-book-ee). Also because of its shape which resembled that of a turtle. A large dragon`s head was attached to the bow of the ship to make it appear more threatening and terrifying to its enemies. Along its sides were mounted numerous cannons at each of the many openings as well as one in the bow structure.
The 'Turtle-War-Ship' sailed amidst the Japanese fleet inflicting many casualties on Hydeyoshi`s naval forces, using its many cannons and sulfuric fires during the 'Im-Jin Engagement' of 1592. This ship became a very famous ship in Korea and was upgraded on a yearly basis during the Chosun Dynasty.
The model kit of the 'Turtle-War-Ship' uses many evidential materials referred to in Admiral Lee`s diary, figures, rebuilt models, etcetera. This particular kit is a copy of the 'Turtle-War-Ship' from the 'Left Oceanic District' in Jeon-Ra province of Korea. Even though the detailed structural drawings and dimensions are not available today, the two deck structure was used in keeping with the known ship designs and schematics from that period in Korean History that are available to us today.

This model is an exact reproduction of a 10 meters long armed launch, which was used by the different navies during the 19th century
These launches were armed with naval guns of different calibre and type; in the bow section a cannon or carronade was installed while in the stern two more light, small cannons were placed to be aimed by hand.
Usually, these boats were employed in coastal patrols or in escort services but, also demonstrated their wartime capacity in surprise actions attacking craft in difficulty or anchored or at roadstead. Due to their remarkable manoeuvrability, they were also in great numbers employed during landing actions, preceeding the main fleet which moved slower and was more vulnerable.
The bow cannon, placed on a wooden structure, attached to the first benches, slid back and forth, recoiling on two slits made on the two carrying guides and was manoeuvred by two forward and aft placed tackles. The marksman occupied himself to raise the cannon while the helmsman was responsible to align the bow at the target.
Mast and sail during the surprise actions were lowered on the benches to proceed and use the oars and to delay as long as possible the interception from the part of the enemy

The HMS Sharke was built in 1711 at the Deptford dockyards on the River Thames, she was principaly designed for stealth and speed. The British government had an on-going problem with patroling the choppy waters of the English Channel, and the surrounding estuary areas. Merchant ships carrying cargo, foreign nationals and even spies would use the cover of darkness to elude the authorites in entering the country. With its tremendous area of sail the HMS Sharke would appear out of nowhere and give chase, she would then bear down on her prey. Because of her shallow draught and minimal tonnage she could follow the smuggler almost anywhere even up shallow rivers and over dangerous shoals. With her armament of cannons and falconets she could easily take care of any smuggler who foolishly thought he could evade the Sharke.
